5 Tips For Women Over 45 Who Are Looking For What To Wear

What you wear says so much about you as a person, and about your personality. Finding clothing that reflects your own style, experience, and passion can be difficult for the over-45s, during pre-menopause or menopause, whose symptoms can hit confidence and drain energy. Sudden hot flashes followed by sudden chills, with the heavy sweating which you hope nobody will notice.

On the other hand, the good thing about being over 45 is becoming wiser, more aware of nature and the challenges we are facing nowadays of climate change, poverty, and pandemics. You want to make a positive impact with every purchase you make.

You don’t want to look too much younger than you are, but also neither do you like to appear older than you are. I do believe that we need to wear the right clothes that suit our personality and body shape.

Here some tips to dress you with comfort, style, and sustainable fashion:

1- Look for sustainable natural fabrics like wool and cashmere

Wool is one of the most sustainable fibers, and comfortable to wear. It is naturally breathable, and can absorb large amounts of sweat and allow it to quickly evaporate. It can also be worn in hot, dry weather as it can make you up to times cooler to touch than synthetic fabrics, with its ability to conduct heat away from your skin. It tends to be more expensive, but if you buy only what you love of sustainable high quality clothing, you will use it over and over again.

2- Think of layers

A few years ago, I was working in an office and I used to see my colleague on the next desk jumping up every few hours to open the window in very cold weather. I always wanted to ask her, why not wear layers so you can peel them off when you need. A light cardigan or dress coat will look elegant and is easy to take off when you feel hot.

3- Downplay the part you don’t like by creating a nice silhouette

Most of us gain some unwanted weight around the tummy, this is due to hormonal changes as well as aging and lifestyle. Of course, you can limit these changes by following a healthy diet, taking more exercise, and being active, but until then, you would love to hide your belly. You need to create a flattering silhouette by using the rule of thirds ( 1/3 – 2/3) and not splitting your body in half. It is surprising how much this helps.

Wearing dark colors is the other tip to create a thinner look and will work perfectly when you can find the right length for your dress or skirt. I believe that knee length, either finishing at the top of the knee or just below will always be flattering for women over 40.

High waisted skirts or pants, will be more comfortable and can give you a long vertical image, making your legs appear longer.

For trousers, I would recommend the wide legged as they can be super comfortable, and which are definitely back on trend this season 2020. Pair them with a tucked top or short cropped tops and, for a perfect look, wear it with high heels. 

4- Choose the tops that you like and highlight the part you love best

Firstly, you need to find what colours suits you best to select effectively the clothing you will love to wear, this will help you look both healthier and younger. Don’t be afraid to try different things until you find which colours flatter your skin and eyes.  One of the very good tips if you would like to hide your belly is to consider choosing an asymmetrical top. Choose the right size that fits you well and don’t go for oversize. Waterfall designs can be eye catching and create a nice vertical line.

Combine a tight skirt or leggings with a looser shirt or tunic, vice versa will work very well too.

5- Don’t ignore the power of accessories to complete your look

Scarves, jewelry, hats, bags, shawls, shoes, and belts complete your look and make you shine.
